What a Professional Bed Bug Treatment Involves
Most London homes are cleared in two to four visits over one to four months, depending on the plan and how far the bed bugs have spread.
1. Inspection
Exterminators check the bed frame, mattress seams, headboard and bedside drawers, then the skirting boards, sockets, sofas and the rooms next door. They confirm it is bed bugs, not fleas or carpet beetles, and choose the treatment for your home
2. Treatment
The technician sprays a residual insecticide into the seams, joints, cracks and sockets where bed bugs hide. Mattresses and soft furnishings are steamed, and heavy or returning infestations get whole-room heat treatment
3. Follow-up visit
About two weeks later, the technician comes back and treats the same areas again. This kills the young bed bugs that hatched from eggs after the first visit, before they grow up and lay eggs of their own
4. Guarantee and aftercare

How to Prepare for Bed Bug Treatment

Preparing your home before the exterminator arrives helps the bed bug treatment reach every hiding place, so the first visit does more of the work. Work through this 8-step checklist the day before your spray or steam treatment;
- Strip the beds and wash bedding and clothes at 60°C, then tumble dry on hot for at least 30 minutes.
- Bag clean laundry and keep it sealed until after the treatment.
- Vacuum the mattress, bed frame, skirting boards and carpet edges, then seal and bin the vacuum bag.
- Clear the floor and the space under the bed.
- Pull the bed and sofa a little away from the wall.
- Empty bedside drawers into a sealed bag.
- Don’t spray shop products first. They push bed bugs into other rooms.
- Keep pets and children out of treated rooms until the spray has settled.
